Pipeline Replacement at Laney College
Project Description
The project consisted of replacing sections of Laney College’s steel pipe natural gas distribution system with new HDPE piping. Near the heart of the campus, Laney College maintenance personnel kept detecting small gas leaks along a main distribution line. After several failed attempts to repair this section of gas line, the college decided to replace it. At this time, Laney College decided to replace another steel distribution line installed during the original construction.
GTS Involvement
GTS provided a design with minimal disruption to campus access and egress by using the existing steel line as a casing for the new HDPE pipe. Not only did this reduce excavations but provided the most economical means of replacing the pipe. GTS created the construction drawings and specifications for the project along with doing the construction management for Laney College. This involved preparing a bid package, facilitating the job walk, reviewing bids, selecting the contractor, coordinating contractor working hours to avoid cancelling classes, and verifying change orders.
